BBQ Shrimp – Ingredients
Jumbo Shrimp: We want those plump, juicy ones – shell-on keeps them extra flavorful.
Onion, celery (sometimes bell pepper) form the classic flavor base in many Louisiana dishes.
Garlic: Lots of it, freshly minced.
Worcestershire Sauce: The tangy, umami backbone of this sauce.
Spice Blend: Creole or Cajun seasoning packs a punch. Adjust the heat to your liking!
Butter, Butter, Butter: The secret to that velvety rich sauce.
New Orleans-Style BBQ Shrimp – Tips
Don’t overcook! Shrimp turn rubbery quickly. Just a few minutes till they’re pink and curled.
Quality butter: It’s a key ingredient, so splurge on the good stuff.
Deglaze the pan: After sautéing aromatics, splash in a bit of white wine or chicken broth to scrape up all the tasty browned bits.
Fresh herbs: A sprinkle of parsley and green onion at the end adds a bright note.
New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp – Variations
- Crank up the heat with extra cayenne or your favorite hot sauce.
- Swap some butter for olive oil and use light Worcestershire.
- Beer Twist: for a richer, slightly malty sauce. Replace with vegetable, shrimp or chicken stock.
How to Serve This BBQ Shrimp?
- Over grits or rice: Turns this into a full-on meal.
- Salad side: A light, fresh salad balances the richness beautifully.
- Party appetizer: Set out with plenty of napkins – things get delightfully messy!
New Orleans BBQ Shrimp – FAQs
Can I use peeled shrimp?
You can, but the flavor won’t be quite as intense.
Fresh or frozen shrimp?
Fresh is best, but high-quality frozen works in a pinch. Just thaw completely and pat dry.
Can I make this ahead of time?
The sauce itself can be made a day in advance. But cook the shrimp right before serving for the best texture.
