What is Shrimp Ceviche ?

Ceviche is a classic Latin American dish where raw seafood is “cooked” by marinating it in citrus juices (lemon, and sometimes orange). The acid in the juices transforms the texture of the shrimp without the need for heat. It’s all about the balance of fresh ingredients and zesty flavors – and it’s incredibly versatile!

Shrimp Ceviche: The Basic Ingredients

Shrimp: Start with fresh, high-quality shrimp. You can use pre-cooked shrimp, but for the best flavor and texture, buy raw shrimp and gently poach them yourself.

Citrus Juices: Lime is essential, with lemon and orange adding complexity. Make sure you have enough to completely cover the shrimp.

Veggies: Classic choices include diced tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and cilantro. Get creative with avocado, bell peppers, or even mango for a touch of sweetness.

Spice (Optional): Add finely chopped jalapeno or serrano pepper for a kick.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use frozen shrimp?

Yes, but thaw completely and pat dry before using.

How long to marinate?

Cooked shrimp need about 15-30 minutes. For raw shrimp, marinate until they turn opaque and are just cooked through (generally 1-2 hours).

Is it safe to eat raw shrimp in ceviche?

While the acid changes the seafood, it doesn’t fully eliminate potential bacteria. Using the freshest shrimp possible and a slightly longer marination time offers better safety.

Shrimp Ceviche – Best Tips

Cut it small! The smaller your shrimp pieces and veggie dice, the better they’ll absorb the marinade.

Go beyond salt and pepper. Try a pinch of cumin or smoked paprika for a flavor twist.

Don’t over-marinate. Shrimp can get mushy if left in the citrus for too long. If you plan to refrigerate longer than 30 minutes, omit the avocado and add it right before serving.

Storing Your Ceviche

Shrimp ceviche is best eaten fresh but will keep in the refrigerator for 1-2 days in an airtight container. Keep in mind the texture will become softer the longer it sits.
